This creature feature showed some promise, as it was brought to us by the
writer of Anaconda and the special effects creator of Jurrasic Park. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to the hype.
Traumatised after seeing his dog and his parents eaten by Komodo dragons
whilst at their holiday home, Patrick Connally is unable to speak of what happened for fear of being considered crazy.
In a last ditch attempt to ‘cure’ the boy his grandmother has his shrink
take him back to the holiday home which is on an island in South Carolina. However, a corrupt oil company, in fear of being shut down have covered up the existence of the Komodo’s and as the oil pollution has killed off all of the crops and wildlife, the Komodo’s have been left with nothing to eat………..until now that is.
I suppose the only real fault with this film is that it has all been done before. The cast, locations and other aesthetic features all work in it’s favour and the Komodo’s themselves are of a high standard,mostly due to the animatronic work.
The faults lie when the Komodo’s aren’t around as there isn’t really that much for the character’s to do and therefore the story becomes boring and uninvolving.
I also didn’t buy the quickness of Patrick’s character progression. One minute he is practically mute and immobile and the next he’s snaring Komodo dragons and cutting their hearts out with his pocket knife.
Whilst the sets, and John Debney’s score all work in the film’s favour to
create atmosphere, it is ultimately the lack of story that hampers it.
OVERALL SUMMARY
In all I was really rather bored by Komodo, which is a shame as judging by the behind the scenes features the cast and crew set out to make a really good film.
