    Nine Lives (2002)

By Phil Davies Brown on September 28, 2004 Reviews

At last, I managed to see the Paris Hilton video that everyone is talking about!! Oh wait a minute not THAT video, I’m talking about her 2002 horror debut in the British horror movie ‘Nine Lives’.

I wasn’t expecting much from this as I am well aware of the negative reviews and Paris bashing surrounding the movie, and whilst it wasn’t that good, I must say that I was totally shocked to discover that Paris Hilton provides the best performance in this!!

To be fair, the role of Jo didn’t exactly stretch her talents, as she plays a socialite who has flown into the UK to attend a birthday party in the Scottish countryside. Paris however took her role and indeed the opportunity seriously, and outshone the rest of the experienced and no doubt qualified cast with minimal effort on her part. Paris gave an effortless performance that instantly made her the most likeable character.

For those of you who haven’t done your homework, the film centres on the nine guests who are possessed in turn by the spirit of Murray, an angry ghost who hates the English.

The film is for the most part aesthetically pleasing and features an attractive cast, but where it falters is in it’s ropey plot and terrible dialogue.

Writer/Director/Producer Andrew Green clearly does not have a talent for writing dialogue, now there is nothing wrong with that as it is a common problem that I myself suffer from, however he should have hired someone to write the screenplay for him rather than hire someone to do ‘additional dialogue’ which probably only served to make the script worse.

Whilst the film is set in Scotland, it was filmed in England and although I was not overly offended it was quite obvious as they played up the whole Scots hate the English aspect and threw in some jokes about Haggis.

As a Scotsman, I was not offended by these aspects, but other audiences may find it mildly offensive.

    OVERALL SUMMARY
Nine Lives will no doubt make it’s way onto video and DVD in this country as Paris Hilton’s fame increases and audiences spend millions at the box-office when ‘House of Wax’ is released. However if you’re anxious to see this, fret not as it isn’t that good a film.
