This documentary from Writer/Director Jason Paul Collum features many of the genre’s most adored actresses discussing what their lives are really like when the cameras are switched off.
The lineup includes Ariauna Albright, Brandi Burkett, Debra Deliso, Denice Duff, Judith O’Dea, Debbie Rochon, Felissa Rose, Lilith Stabs and Julie Strain.
Brinke Stevens presents the documentary, and if anyone is qualified to talk about the subjects at hand it would be her. She is as lovely as ever, and the actresses do reveal some very interesting and deeply personal secrets to the camera.
Jason Paul Collum is fluent in genre history, so he asks questions that many of us want to hear answered, but I’m afraid that the sequential nature of the piece means that parts of the conversation feel as though they should have been used in earlier categories.
The actresses all look great and are very warm and informal, but I’m surprised that they didn’t take time to ensure that each of the beauties was photographed correctly, as some of the ladies are poorly lit and there are a few moments of audio trouble also. I guess this fits in well through a twist of irony, as the ladies complain about the poor treatment they often receive in the genre, due to ageing and not having big enough boobies amongst other unflattering things.
By far the most surprising thing for me when watching the DVD was that the women have no idea how influential and highly regarded they each are by horror fans. I have had the pleasure of chatting to and interviewing many of the ladies featured here, and like the majority of people working in the genre, they are extremely modest about their cult status.
OVERALL SUMMARY
A highly informative look at life as a working horror genre actress. You’ll learn a lot that you didn’t already know about the women, and you’ll respect them all the more for it. Something to Scream About is a highly insightful piece of cinema that works so well because of the bonds between the women and their director.
